Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create a message "rule" to filter spam in Outlook 2013
When our spam filter tags a message as spam, it adds text to the subject line to make it easier to create a message rule to automatically move those messages to a folder or to the trash.

Outlook 2013 makes it easy to create a rule to filter out messages with specific words in the subject line.   There are a few different ways to create a rule.   This is one of the easier ways:

  1. Make sure you're in your Inbox in Outlook
  2. Click on the "Home" tab at the top of the window
  3. Click on the "Rules" button and select "Create Rule"
  4. Check the "Subject Contains" checkbox and type !!!!! SPAM-DETECTED !!!!! in the text area
  5. Under "Do the following" check "Move the item to folder:" and click the "Select Folder" button and select the Junk or Trash folder.
  6. Click "OK"
  7. If a pop-up box asks if you want to run the rul now, say yes, and check the checkbox that says Run this rule now on messages already in the current folder.
  8. Click "OK"
That should automatically move all mail marked by our spam filter to the folder you selected, so you don't have to deal with it.

Remember to occasionally check that folder to make sure any mail you might want isn't going there.   Also, make sure you empty it occasionally.
